PE
We are passionate about PE and sport at Fairchildes. Having fun and being active through physical activity is essential for children’s health, development and wellbeing.
Children achieve their expected 2 hours of physical activity a week through a varied, progressive and fun curriculum. PE lessons are inclusive and meet individual needs. PE lessons follow the guidance set out in the National Curriculum in England Framework Document (2013), supplemented by resources from ‘The PE Hub’.
In addition, several year groups receive ‘Street dance’ lessons from an expert teacher each week.
In Year 4, children have weekly swimming lessons taught by an expert swimming coach.
For some children PE is when they truly excel and meet their potential. We ensure that these abilities are met and catered for through our extra Sports ‘gifted and talented’ provision.
Throughout the year, children also take part in various sports and active events, such as ‘Games Day’, Inter-School Sports Day and National Sports Week.
All children have opportunities to experience and try out new sports on our special ‘taster days’. These may include Archery, Korfball, Boccia and Volleyball.

Fairchildes Swim Team
As part of our PE curriculum, pupils in Year 4 have a block of weekly swimming lessons, which take place at Royal Russell School. The class is split into three ability groups, each taught by fully qualified and experienced swimming teachers, allowing all children to make good progress, whatever their starting point.
Every year, our most talented swimmers from Years 4-6 (those who can swim at least 100m) form a team to take part in the Croydon Schools’ Swimming Association primary gala. The children have additional training sessions with Mrs Dobb, designed to identify their strongest strokes, and to teach them the rules of competitive swimming. Did you know that if you do not touch the wall with both hands simultaneously at the end of a length of breaststroke, you will be disqualified? They then race against children from other schools, in one of the four preliminary galas held in January. All the times are recorded, and the fastest six overall, for each age group/stroke, get invited back to the finals. We are always very proud of the progress the children make in just a few weeks, and particularly the way in which they support each other on race day. It is certainly an experience to remember! We are always looking out for new talent, so if you can swim, keep practising hard and look out for information about next year’s trials.
